'Isn't it courtesy?': Manager demands resigning employee give more than 3 weeks notice, she decides to give 0

Giving notice might be a standard part of leaving a job, but it isn't usually done for the sake of the employee.

In fact, it is widely accepted that this is a courtesy that is done to smooth the transition for the employer, so they can prepare for the exit of the worker and begin to try to find their replacement. More often than not, the employee has another job or experience lined up for them to go to, and it goes without saying that they would likely not get a notice period if they were fired instead.

Most employees understand the importance of the notice period and respect it accordingly. Often, its conditions will be in the contract of work before they even start. However, it has been known for untrustworthy employers to change the goal posts in the case of their workers leaving, in particular when they are valuable to the business.

  • When somebody is put in this situation as an employee, it can prove to be the ultimate frustration. They may be ready to move on to their next chapter, but they are forced to align with the desires of management. It can take a lot for them to go against this.

    In this story, a woman decided to leave the company she had worked for for a year, as she wanted to return to education. When she announced her intentions to her manager, she complained that the 3 weeks' notice she had offered would not be enough time for them to find a replacement.

    As a stopgap measure, the woman agreed to continue to work part time. Soon, though, she would be quitting without giving her employer any notice.

    A little background: I've been working for this company full time since May 2024, as part of an office staff for a small, family-owned swim school. I've been promoted twice on account of my work ethic and not being problematic. Since I've started, we've fired around (5) office staff members and had another 5 quit. The supervisors have stayed the same, but out of all the "regular" office staff, I've been here the longest.

Since this place doesn't employ part time office staff, I figured I would find another job for those 3 days I am available + after school.

  • sparksgirl1223 When I got pushback about how much notice I gave (coupled with the way said pushback was worded), I stopped showing up all together. Notice is a courtesy that has been instilled in us. That same job wouldn't give you much, if any, notice if they were laying you off or firing you.

  • MemeHermetic I was told once when I gave my notice that my boss was a little disappointed because I didn't give a full 2 weeks notice. I gave 1 day short of 2 weeks. So I looked him in the eye and asked if he were letting me go, would I get 2 weeks notice? So this seems like quite the courtesy on my part. It was easy to throw at him because he was the primary reason I decided to leave.

  • curvydisobedience88 It's a courtesy, not mandatory to give a 2- week (or any) notice. My last 2 jobs | typed up my resignation and gave them 2 weeks notice and immediately upon giving them the resignation I was told "ok, we accept your resignation effective immediately" packed my shit and told to leave my badge and keys. So from here on out I will never give a notice.
